Abstract
This paper examines the intersection of animal welfare and planning legislation in terms of the production and disposal of wastewater, one aspect of commercial dog breeding. This document will explore how this issue is handled in the planning application of large commercial dog breeders in the Republic of Ireland. The case study provides examples of how failure to take into account animal welfare legislation at the planning stage not only risks jeopardizing animal welfare but also undermines the objectives of planning and environmental legislation.
